I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand —
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep — while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?

Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

- E. A. Poe, from A Dream Within a Dream

As a metaphysicist, the concept of Time has always fascinated me. Is it, as Albert Einstein conjectured, merely "a stubbornly persistent illusion" or is it in some sense a real thing? In The Lyme Brook Mist, I make much use of ideas relating to time, of time slowing down and of time even stopping in one reality relative to another. All of the discussions around this in the book, of course, form part of a narrative that plays along at a quick pace and all makes sense (or nonsense!) within the confines of the story. But as it is such a recurrent theme in literature, I thought I would make a little space on this website to post some videos and articles about the subject of time and hopefully visitors and site members will comment and leave other links. It's a funny thing about metaphysics - a subject I stared studying in detail as a teenager, now over four decades ago - that the more one studies it, the less one knows about it, and the older one gets, the closer one comes to the same conclusion expounded by Socrates: I know nothing.
